A wine of elegance and detail from Spain’s Bierzo region in the country’s North West (in that area to the North of neighbouring Portugal). This is the territory for red wines made from Mencia and Alicante Bouschet and crisp whites, particularly from Godello. This Mencia comes from old vineyards over a century old and to ensure that the fruit has been kept in the spotlight, the grapes have been fermented in large vats and then matured in large oak barrels. The Mencia has been joined by some Alicante Bouschet (Garnacha Tintorera) and Bastardo.
Vibrant in colour as it is in the mouth with complex berry, and cherry fruit, countered with a distinct earthiness. It has a winning nature with a smoothness sitting under the bright fruit. This certainly delivers as much character in the glass as its maker does. A local delicacy of this area is the botillos, smoked and spiced sausages and you should look no further than this for inspiration to match this wine, even if you add a bit of spice to the sauce on your burger.
Quickie review «A fruity, ripe and deliciously plump blend of some of Spain’s more interesting grape varieties. That berry and earthy combination makes this an ideal dinner companion.»
